Adult £5.00 incl. transport costs - 9.5 miles, bring picnic lunch

Date: Friday 6th September

  • Start time: 09:00

  • Distance: 9.5 miles

  • Duration: 6 hours

  • Difficulty: Demanding

  • Places: 14

  • Start point: Explore BoA, Westbury Gardens BA15 1DE (W3W: thud.forced.issuer)

  • Leader: Nigel Gerdes

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the stated start time, to allow for registration and briefing and may we remind you that we have an ‘assistance dogs only’ policy?

Also, bring a picnic lunch, plus snacks and plenty of water for the other refreshment stops. If the weather is particularly warm, as it can be this time of year, we recommend bringing at least 2 litres of water.

We’ll meet at the registration tent in Westbury Gardens then board the minibus to take us to the start of the walk in the village of Wellow, in Somerset, about a 20 minute journey.

The 9.5 mile walk will take us through the beautiful countryside of Somerset, at first on an old railway path, which is now a shared use pedestrian and
cycleway where we’ll enjoy lovely views over the rolling hills. The route then takes us alongside the gentle Midford Brook with a super view of Midford Castle. We’ll stop for lunch at Monkton Combe where we can visit the grave of Harry Patch, the last surviving Tommy from World War 1 who died at the age of 111.

Moving on to Dundas we’ll join the remains of the old Somerset Coal Canal then follow the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal from Dundas aqueduct, in the Avon Valley, to the bottom of Winsley Hill.

A climb up the hill, for about 400m. will take us to the lane to Murhill where we’ll cross a field with fabulous views across the valley. Passing through the villages of Winsley, then Turleigh we’ll take the road back to Bradford on Avon, cross the River Avon via the old bridge then walk back to Westbury Gardens alongside the river.

There will almost certainly be a few very short, muddy sections, so sticks are advised to help with balance, there are just a couple of stiles and two climbs.
