Holt & Great Chalfield
We recommend you use a map with this description, either on the OS Maps smartphone app or an OS map such as the Bradford on Avon Walking Wheel map.
You might like to factor in a visit to the National Trust Courts Gardens in Holt, directly opposite the Three Lions bus stop and/or a visit to National Trust’s Great Chalfield Manor (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday afternoons).
From the stone bus shelter by the Town Bridge catch the No. 69 ‘ZigZag’ bus towards Corsham . The journey takes about 6 minutes.
From the Three Lions bus stop in Holt walk back a short distance towards BoA to pass the front of the PO & stores then turn right into The Midlands, passing the Village Hall on your right.
At the bend continue straight ahead between buildings onto Brook Lane; the Glove Factory is on the left. You soon join a footpath where there is an open grassed area and a small lake to your left.
At the path junction you now follow the green waymarkers of the OuterCircle of The BoA Walking Wheel. Bear off right to follow the field edge round to the far corner of this large field. Cross a stream then continue in the same direction.
Where the path divides take the right hand one and cross two more fields keeping the wood on your immediate right. At the corner of the wood bear left to join a lane at a bend.
Continue ahead on the lane passing the front of the lovely Great Chalfield Manor. At the next bend keep straight ahead on the farm track, passing Little Chalfield Farm and arriving at a road.
Turn left then at the junction (Poor House Cottage), bear left downhill. After about 150 metres turn off right onto a footpath. Keep the hedge/fence on your left and climb gently through two fields. Eventually you reach a road and Mirkens Farm Cafe is just along to your left.
Turn right onto the road; you are now following the blue waymarkers of Spoke 2 of The Wheel. At the T junction turn left and follow the pavement for about 300 metres.
Just opposite the farm buildings on the other side of the road look out for the stile on the left in the hedgerow. Cross this small field then through a little gate to cross a driveway, over the stile, turn left for a few metres then right to follow the well defined path through several fields.
Aim for the back of some houses, join the track and at the end go slightly right to take the short footpath across a grassed area. Cross the road with care then keep straight ahead passing Woolley Grange Hotel on your right then a bit later The George.
From The George you follow the orange waymarkers of the Inner Circle of The Wheel all the way back to the bus stop in the centre of BoA.
