Monthly led walks

We lead two morning walks every month, on the second Sunday and the last Tuesday. They almost always depart at 9.30 a.m. from the War Memorial (see map below) in Westbury Gardens by the Town Bridge in the centre of BoA, BA15 1DE. There is no charge and they are usually between 5 and 7 miles long; we are generally out for around 3 – 3.5 hours.

The walks are open to anyone at all – residents of BoA, visitors, neighbours from other towns and villages, in fact the more the merrier. They are very sociable occasions and we aim to stop for refreshment, either en route or back in BoA.

We walk at a reasonable pace and stop occasionally to allow people to catch up. However, it is everyone’s responsibility to be sure they are capable of walking the distances we expect to cover and to make sure they wear appropriate footwear and clothing. This doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy expensive gear – robust shoes or trainers will be fine and something waterproof and warm, appropriate to the weather conditions; your comfort and protection are the main considerations.

The monthly walks are all graded as ‘moderate’ which means they will almost certainly involve climbing stiles and there will be at least one steep gradient to negotiate. The ground underfoot will be variable and we will encounter any combination of – tarmac, field & wood paths, rocky, uneven, muddy and tree roots. The pace will be steady (but not slow) and we will stop occasionally for a drink or to catch our breath!

Dogs: Assistance dogs are welcome.
Children: are also welcome and must be accompanied by a responsible adult who needs to be confident that the children have the stamina and concentration to complete the walk based on the information we have provided.

The Canal and River Trust car park  in Baileys Barn, BA15 1BX has 100+ spaces and is less well used than the town centre car parks.  It’s about an 8 minute walk to the War Memorial.

Jonathan Brown is leading Tuesday’s 7 mile walk. We’ll leave BoA alongside the River Avon through the Country Park and climb up through Becky Addy woods to Westwood.  Some road walking, on quiet roads, takes us past Downside Nurseries dropping down to Freshford. We’ll pass the new Freshford Mill development, cross the River Frome then climb up the hill before circling back past the Inn at Freshford.  Following the Rivers Frome then Avon as far as Avoncliff we’ll stop for coffee at the newly refurbished Cross Guns, returning to BoA about 1pm.

MONTHLY  SUNDAY WALK  9 July – all day walk

Leaving 9.30 a.m. from the War Memorial in Westbury Gardens, next to the Town Bridge – BA15 1DE

Chris Turner will be leading this all day walk of around 10 miles. We’ll climb out of town towards St Laurence School and the Music Centre crossing fields past Hartley Farm to Conkwell where there will be lovely views of the Avon Valley before dropping down to Dundas. We’ll pass through the village of Monkton Combe and along lanes to Tucking Mill before joining the Two Tunnels cycle route. Walking  into Bath alongside the River Avon we’ll finish at the bus station where everyone will make their own way home either by bus or train.

The route is a mix of footpaths, field paths, woods and lanes and apart from the descent to Dundas, which is quite stony, is fairly easy going.  There will be a few stiles.

Please bring a picnic lunch and sufficient refreshment for at least one drinks & snacks stop. There will be no cafe stop en route.
