This is a circular, cross country walk from Corsham to Colerne along country lanes, across farmland and through old woodlands, with far reaching views. There are lots of stiles and several steep climbs and descents.
The walk starts along the old tramway and through a nature reserve. We cross really peaceful countryside through the atmospheric Weavern Valley with its derelict farmhouse. Skirting Monks Wood, an SSSI and ancient woodland managed by the Woodland Trust we join the Macmillan Way for a short while, past Euridge Manor and on to Thickwood and Colerne where we stop for our picnic lunch. There are public toilets in Colerne and there may be time for a quick look inside the C13th St John the Baptist Church.
We make our way back to Corsham and the Springfield Campus through Widdenham, another hidden valley, before a steep climb back to Middlewick and Pickwick where Charles Dickens apparently stayed at the Hare and Hounds; the innkeeper, Moses Pickwick, may have inspired The Pickwick Papers.
This is the first year the Corsham and BoA Walkers are Welcome groups have collaborated to provide walks for each other’s festivals and we are delighted to be working like this with our neighbouring Wiltshire WAW town.
